Healing Divides: A Dialogue with Criminologist Dr. Deborah Burris-Kitchen

Send us a Text Message.

What if we could create a more just society by addressing the challenges in the field of criminology and working together to build bridges instead of burning them? This week, I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Deborah Burris-Kitchen, a PhD and professor of criminology and department chair at Tennessee State University in Nashville. Not only is she an academic powerhouse, she's also a marathoner and triathlete, showcasing her commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Burris-Kitchen and I dove into some of the most pressing issues in criminology today, such as police brutality and the overrepresentation of people of color in the prison system. We discussed the need for restorative justice, the damaging effects of toxic masculinity, institutionalized racism, and ways we can move beyond division in America. Dr. Burris Kitchen also shared insights from her book, Exposed, which addresses these topics through powerful poetry and short stories.

Our conversation touched on practical solutions, like investing in our children's education and addressing mental health issues in the criminal justice system. We also delved into the importance of showing love and support for the younger generation. If you want to learn more about Dr. Burris-Kitchen's work, check out her book 'Exposed' on Amazon and social media. Together, let's use our gifts and talents to make a difference and create a better future.
